A Weston Collective Panel Discussion at the Pacific Grove Art Center in Collaboration with Arts Habitat and The Center for Photographic Art
Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday for our panel discussion with past Weston Scholarship winners and Kaitlin Emmons who is a member of the community darkroom. The event was standing room only and we are so thankful for the support from our community. We want to thank Arts Habitat and The Center for Photographic Art for collaborating with us on this event. Thank you to the Pacific Grove Art Center for providing the venue.
It was enlightening to hear the experiences from students who have submitted to the Weston Scholarship competition and who were awarded a scholarship. The scholarship panelists included: Carys Card and Selma Ruiz of Santa Catalina School and Anna Newman and Charles Clarke of Cabrillo Community College. Creating a portfolio of 10 photographs is a feat in itself and to hear how these students approached the work was really interesting. Selma talked about how before completing and submitting to the scholarship, she didn’t even consider herself artistic. Carys explained how the competition gave her further insight into the curatorial field she is interested in pursuing in college. Anna used the Weston Scholarship as a way for her to apply to grad school in Nevada and was thrilled when she was accepted. Congratulations, Anna! Charles said the scholarship process helped him keep his creativity alive and that seeing his photograph hung in a museum is something that will stick with him forever.
Kaitlin Emmons talked about her artistic process and how the community darkroom has allowed her to continue to push and pursue her art in the community. Kaitlin is leading a 3 hour workshop at the Weston Collective on February 8th on layering colors. She does some very fun and creative things with her photography. We are so lucky to have her creative spirit within our ranks!
