The Weston Collective 2020 Workshop Series
Photoshop Flow with Rick Murai
May 28, 2020
The Weston Collective embraces historic and traditional darkroom processes but is excited with the potential of digital imaging as an exciting, accessible and potent creative medium. Spend an enjoyable day with Rick Murai as you learn a simple, straight-forward and repeatable Photoshop workflow that mimics traditional darkroom techniques and produces gallery and reproduction quality results. After creating an ideal file, one can explore the gobs of after-market enhancements, or readily produce digital negatives used for the alternate process workshops offered by the Weston Collective. Film scanning will be discussed and students will be able to print several of their completed files. Students should bring a laptop with Photoshop.
Each participant will walk away with an 8x10 digital image printed on our Canon Pro 2000!
Gum Bichromate Workshop with Brian Taylor
May 29 - 30, 2020
This is a class for artists and photographers of all levels. The techniques presented in this class allow us to print photographs on alternative surfaces like watercolor papers and even fabric, which can be displayed as finished works of art or used in handmade books, collage, painting and drawing. This workshop will cover a lot of ground including demonstrations, slide presentations, viewing prints, and plenty of hands-on time with individual instruction to explore the process and produce your own artwork. We’ll begin by creating a cyanotype on watercolor paper and then methodically print layers of colors resulting in unique, handmade images that are the direct result of your imagination and desire.
Advanced skills in digital or traditional darkroom photography are not assumed or required. A complete Student Materials List as well as a Course Handbook will be sent to participants before the workshop starts. Class is limited to 8 participants.
Large Format Landscape Workshop with Kim Weston and Rick Murai
July 24 - 26, 2020
Large format photography has experienced a resurgence for photographers seeking a contemplative and hands-on approach that requires one to slow down, observe, and shoot sparingly. Join Kim Weston and Rick Murai for a fascinating weekend as they demystify view camera practice. A hands-on discussion of large format usage will be followed by an afternoon field session and will end with the opportunity to develop and contact print your sheet film. The group will enjoy a Saturday evening tour of Edward Weston’s historic darkroom and cabin at Wildcat Hill followed by print sharing and an informal dinner hosted by Gina, Kim and Zach Weston. This intensive weekend is a wonderful opportunity to learn about large format photography or to refine your large format camera work. Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment but sheet film and paper will be provided. We have a handful of 4x5 view cameras to lend out. 8x10 view cameras are welcomed as well!

Jim Fitzgerald is a large and Ultra large format Photographer, Camera Builder and Carbon Transfer Specialist. Mr. Fitzgerald is also an educator who teaches the historic process known as Carbon Transfer Printing.
